The Child at The Petit Palais, Paris

This enamelled sanstone piece created between 1889 and 1894 was made by Jean Carries (Lyon, 1855 - Paris, 1894) is called The Infant. Arsene Alexandre, the biography of Carries, speaks about the sculpture, "This child, perhaps six years old but is still a baby, [...] a child of noble blood, royal without down, is stood in a defiant yet feared attitude. One doesn't know what she sees, perhaps in deep sorrow, perhaps Madame la Morte who knocks on her door. She holds colsely to her chest a worn out doll, all flat and piteous".
