Masculine Divinity at the Guimet Museum, Paris

This is a fragment an overall full representation of a buddha, only the head remains. It originates from Cambodia but its exact provenance is not known. It was created in the style 'Pre Rup' in the third quarter of the Xth Century, made out of sandstone.
The Pre Rup style is familiar with Cambodia as it shares the name with one of the most popular ancient temples in the country.  The temple’s name is a comparatively modern one meaning "turn the body". This reflects the common belief among Cambodians that funerals were conducted at the temple, with the ashes of the body being ritually rotated in different directions as the service progressed.
