Saint Barbara at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

This limewood sculpture of Saint Barbara was created out of Limewood and is originally from Augsburg in Germany, carved about 1510. The exceptionally fine details of this sculpture suggest that the figure was not intended to be fully painted. The cameo-like buttons on her mantle depict Hercules and the centaur Nessus, symbols of Barbara's strength. The sculpture is also remarkable for the dynamic rendering of the drapery, likely the result of Italian Renaissance influences in Augsburg during the early sixteenth century.
