This is a marble portrait of Julia Mamaea, originating from the Roman Severan period, ca. A.D. 225-235. Over twenty portraits survive of Julia Mamaea, a powerful memeber of the Severan dynasty who was niece of the empress Julia Domna and mother of the emperor Alexander Severus (r. A.D. 222-235).
