The portrait closely follows the iconography of female members of the Augustan imperial family. The hairstyle resembles that worn by Livia (58 B.C.-A.D.29), wife of the emperor Augustus, as a young woman, but the sitter has also been identified as Octavia (69-11 B.C.), Augustus' sister. The high-quality workmanship is in keeping with imperial portraits
