The Peloponnese sculptor Selanion had created a portrait of Plato (428-348 BC) to decorate the gardens of the Academy of Athens, commissioned by Mithridates, according to Diogenes Laërtius (De Vitis Philosophorum, III, 25 cited in Memorabilia of Favorinus). The identification of the commission is not clear, and it is difficult to identify the exact date of its creation. Despite the incomplete state of the inscription on this weathered bust, the two last letters of the name of the philosopher can confirm the identification of this face.
