3D modely ARTLion of Damascus at The Middelheim Museum, AntwerpTitle Lion of Damascus Artist Mirko Basaldella Date 1954-1956 Medium Bronze Dimensions X Accession# X Credit Placed at the Middelheim Museum Mirko Basadella was an Italian-American sculptor, painter and draftsman. He came from an artistic family, his brothers and Afro Dino Basaldella were also artists of international renown. He studied art at the "Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze" and at the "Scuola di Arti applicate di Monza" in Arturo Martini. With Martini worked in Monza 1930-1932 together. From 1932-1934, both brothers Afro and Mirko worked in Milan in Arturo Martini's studio. His first important exhibition was Mirko but in October 1928, when he participated with his two brothers Dino and Afro Basaldella and Alessandro Filipponi on the I ° Mostra della Scuola d'friulana avanguardia (1st Exhibition of the Friulian Avant-garde school). In 1934 Mirko moved to Rome. In Rome he made with his brother and other artists in the gallery "Comet" from. Also in 1934 his work has been exhibited in the "Galleria Sabatello" in Rome. He made primarily bronze sculptures. In 1936 followed his first solo exhibition in the gallery "Comet". Also in 1936 was Mirko participants at the Venice Biennale and presented in the same year together with his brother Afro in the gallery "Mint" in Turin. In the following years, Mirko had among other exhibitions in Rome and New York. In the years 1946-1947 Mirko experimented picturesque with the post-cubist and a style similar to the Metaphysical painting imagery. In the years 1948-1954 Mirko had numerous solo exhibitions in New York, Rome and Milan, and created a number of monumental sculptures. Mirko took part in documenta 1 (1955) and Documenta II (1959) in Kassel. 1957 Mirko moved to the US where he was, until his death in 1969, Director of Design Workshops (sculpture) at Harvard University in Boston.
