The actor wears the woollen costume of the old Silenus from the Attic satyr play of the classical period. Satyrs and Silenoi were wild hybrid creatures in the retinue of Dionysus, the god of wine and theatre. They formed the chorus in the satyr play, led by Papposilenus.
