Title Hut-pyxis Artist Unknown, Cycladic (Keros-Syros culture) Date 2700-2300 BC Medium Marble Dimensions Diameter: 17.3 cm Accession # GR 1969.10-1.1 Credit Purchased from Robin Symes, 1969 Carved marble footed hut pyxis. The sides fo the pyxis are covered with horizontal incised encircling grooves, and there are two paired pierced lug handles. All other examples of hut pyxis are made of chlorite schist. The large hole in the bottom of the pyxis may have been made deliberately in an act of ritual 'killing' (curator's comments, Fitton, J. L. 1999. 'Cycladic Art', second edition.
