Homer at The British Museum, London

No true portraits of the legendary writer Homer survive. During the Hellenistic period several different portrait types of Homer were invented by sculptors as no true portrait existed. While Roman patrons often preferred busts of famous historical characters, Greek statues were carved as full-length figures: the body was considered as essential to the portrait to as the face. Originally from Baiae, Italy, made around 250-200BC.
