Narcisse at the Palais des Beaux- Arts in Lille, France

 
The sculptor Ernest Eugene Hiolle (1834-1886) depicts a young man lying gracefully on a rock. His head bowed, in a languid attitude, he admires his reflection while his hand gently touches his reflction. At the foot of the rock, reeds seem to emerge from the water. The artist translates the narcissus dilemma into a very senusal pose: the torment of the soul and the abandonment of the body. The body of the teenager curves and twist - suggesting sensuality, possibly with himself. The hair of Narcissus, flexible and corrugated, is dotted with flowers, daffodils, reminiscent of the fate the gods have reserved for young Adonis.
