Oedipus ("swollen foot") was a mythical Greek king of Thebes, the son and killer of Laius, son and consort of Jocasta, and father and sibling ofPolynices, Eteocles, Antigone, and Ismene. A tragic hero in Greek mythology, Oedipus accidentally fulfilled the prophecy, despite his efforts not to, that he would end up killing his father and marrying his mother, thereby bringing disaster to his city and family.
This is a larger than life, beautifully carved marble sculpture by Antoine-Denis Chaudet (Paris, 1763 - Paris, 1810). This plaster copy was presented to the Salon in 1801. It depicts the part of Oedipus's life after he was abandoned by his parents (upon hearing about the prophecy) and hung to a tree by his feet- note "swollen foot"; the adult figure is a shepherd, Phorbas who is feeding him water and caring for him.
