Co-Emperor Lucius Verus at The Royal Ontario Museum, Ontario

This marble bust was discovered in Osia (near Rome) in 1797 and is believed to have been carved in AD 165-170. The sculpture depicts Co-Emperor Lucius Verus. Lucius Verus was adopted as heir by the Emperor Antoninus Pius and served as Co-Emperor with Marcus Aurelius, whose daughter he married. This magnificent example of Imperial portraiture depicts the Emperor as an all-powerful dignified ruler. note the extensive use of the drill to create his hair and beard.
