Time and Death at The V&A, London

This model represents a recurrent theme in Bernini's work. It depicts the victory of Time over Death, asserting the triumph of immortality - of fame and reputation - while reminding the viewer of mortality. Although it is not a study for any known sculpture, Bernini may have made it for a tomb, perhaps in preparation for an ephemeral work, such as a temporary structure for a funeral.
