Cardinal Liénart at Lille, France

This is a bronze sculpture of cardinal Liénart by Jean Roulland. Jean Roulland is one of the main protagonists of Roubaix Group with Arthur Van Hecke, Eugène Dodeigne and Eugène Leroy. He attended the School of Fine Arts in Roubaix. After working in a ceramics factory, he devoted himself full time to sculpture from 1960 and settled in Ardèche few years between 1963 and 1967, before returning to settle permanently in French Flanders. Influenced in his youth by Brancusi, he made some wooden sculptures, ceramic or stone before developing from 1961 personal style much more expressionistic. Fascinated by the bronze, he taught himself the technique of lost wax, and cross himself the first copy of most of his bronzes in his studio. At the same time he developed a painted work (some paintings, but mostly pastels) and engravings.
