Wall Relief at Tate Britain, London

This stone relief of a man's head can be found directly above the side entrance of Tate Britain. Heads guarding doors or decorating awnings and buildings were made for various reasons depending on the date and location; an example of this is in Gothic architecture where faces would be used to warn off dark spirits and encourage a place of sanctuary (see gothic cathedrals and places of worship, usually on the ceiling!)
Tate Britain was created in the late 1800s and was commisssioned to Sidney R.J. Smith to design the front face and main gallery. With this in mind it can be thought that the figure resembles the popular architectural ornament The Green Man (read more about this here).
