The Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser at The British Museum, London

The obelisk was erected in the centre of Nimrud shortly before Shalmaneser III's death. It records the king's campaigns, showing tribute brought from all directions, identifyied by captions. The places from which the tribute came, from top to bottom, are: 1. Gilzanu (western Iran), 2. Jehu, king of Israel, 3. Musri (perhaps eastern Iran), 4. Suhi (on the Middle Euphrates), 5. Patina (south Turkey). The stone itself is a fine-grain black limestone streaked with white.
