Mankind at The V&A, London

This hoptonwood stone sculpture was executed in London by Eric Gill (1882-1940) in 1927-8. Trained as a letter cutter and stone mason, Gill received no formal academic art education. Although he later took on many assistants to help in his busy workshop, Gill retained his belief in the purity and sacred nature of materials. He championed the idea of direct carving, working without a preparatory model, and lived in the manner of medieval craftsman, setting up artists' guilds wherever he was based.
