William Stuart at The V&A, London

This is a marble bust (on its original pedestal) of William Stuart, the Archbishop of Armagh, signed and dated 1828. William Stuart died in 1822 and two years later on his son commissioned this classically influenced bust. Chantrey's ledgers record that a bill for £157 was sent out in 1825, but the inscribed date of 1828 suggests that the bust remained in the sculptor's studio for some years. It is a good example of Chantrey's skill in carving drapery. It was sculpted by Sir Francis Chantrey (1781-1841)
