Torso at The V&A, London

The sculptor, Frank Dobson, began his career as a painter in 1914 but after the war he increasingly turned his attention to sculpture. His admiration for the human form led to a series of nude studies, alwas workking from life. 'Torso', with its simplified form and flowing lines, was probably influenced by his interest in Cubism and his study of Egyptian and African Art. It was carved from Portland stone in 1933.
