Fallen Caryatid with Urn at the Musée Rodin, Paris

Intended for The Gates of Hell, whee it was placed in the left corner of the tympanum, the Caryatid personifies despondency and disillusion, sadness and despair. Rodin enlarged the small model of 1886 and presented it at the Fall Salon of 1909, under the title Destiny. Bowed beneath the weight of destiny, the crushed yet sturdy caryatid originally bore these verses by poet Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867):
"Many a flower regretfullyExhales pefume soft as secretsIn a profound solitude".
