The pair of Maya name glyphs inscribed on the right flange indicate that this portrait of a ruler was reused by a Maya lord as an heirloom. Unusually the glyphs are drawn backward to face the Olmec portrait, hinting at the power of the object as a dymbol of dynastic authority. The iris of the eyes and pierced nose probably bore shell work and ornaments.
