Monument to Jan Frans Willems in Ghent, Belgium

Jan Frans Willems (1793-1846), ‘the Father of the Flemish Movement’, fought for a better position of the Dutch language in Flanders and wrote several literary works. It is no coincidence that his statue was placed right across from the Royal Dutch Theatre, which was the counterpart of the Opera, the French-language theatre. This statue is a symbolic representation of Flemish emancipation.
