The Toast at The Petit Palais, Paris

The Toast is of the six allegories destined to ornate the corners of the dining quarters of the Hotel de Vilel in Paris, reconstructed after the fire of 1871. The artwork was completed by Jules-Félix Coutan (Paris, 1849 - Paris, 1884) after the death of the original sculptor Jean-Antoine-Marie Idrac (Paris, 1848 - Paris, 1939) in 1884. The two artists renewed a classic vocabulary and without originality (a woman wearing a classic dress with a crown of leaves), by forging it with a modern gesture: the person raises her glass to the new Republican era.
