The crown of ivy and vine allows us to recognise the subject of this sculpture as a Maenad, a figure who would accompany the procession of the god Dionysus (Bacchus, the wine god). This statue in the Louvre could have been a replica of the Roman era, a Greek original, now lost, created in the course of the third centutry BC.
 
The right arm and vase are both restorations.
